A former fellow of the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Islamic Architecture from the University of London, and a Master of Arts in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. He is the Founder and General Director of the AMAR Centerin Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The AMAR Center works on the revival and sustainable development of traditional architecture through research and studies. The AMAR Center restores and rehabilitates traditional buildings and houses in Jeddah, Makkah Almukaramah, and Almadinah Almunawarah. Some recent projects of The Amar Center include the International Medical Center, the Mosque and Cultural center in Boston, the construction of Al-Makkiyah villa in Jeddah, and the Mosque Al Shargeyh for the governor of the eastern region. The AMAR Center has developed an architectural library containing more than 50,000 images of traditional architectural elements and drawings. The Center maintains close contact and collaborates with various universities, research institutions, and professional organizations, on both the local and international levels.
Dr. Angawi is the former director of the Hajj Research Center which conducted scientific studies covering many areas of research, especially those related to architecture, environment, pollution, housing, transportation and movement, urban planning, and land uses for the cities of Makkah, Madinah and the Holy areas.

Dr. Angawi has offered several Lectures on Hajj, Makkah, Madinah, and Islamic Architecture at Harvard university and he is a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Jeddah Chapter of Al Umran Saudi Association (Saudi Architectural Association).
